Musical Activism

Picture
Musical activism is the idea of aligning with organizations and collaborating on projects that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the arts. It’s using ones musical voice as a tool to enact social change.

What does this look like?
As a performer
  • Programming works written by composers of diverse backgrounds with an emphasis on women, people of color, and living composers.

  • Collaborating with artists and organizations whose projects promote themes of social justice.

  • Performing in neighborhoods and communities that do not have regularly scheduled classical music performances.

As a composer and arranger
  • Writing arrangements of traditional Black American music: Spirituals, Blues, Jazz, R+B, etc. with the goal of showcasing and acknowledging the rich tradition of this music, where it came from, and its creators.

As an educator
  • Teaching students living in traditionally underserved neighborhoods.
  • Mentoring students of color with aspirations of achieving musical success at the highest level.
